The public is welcome to the opening for this unique exhibit that examines the origins and development of tattoos in American culture, focusing on the history of the American tattoo, stigmatization of tattoos, societal acceptance and mainstreaming, as well a modern developments in tattoo technology.

Mammoths, Mastodons and More Science Night
6-8 pm; Fee: $2 per person
Imagine life for the animals of the ice ages – how did they survive? Learn all about ice age animals with your family at Family Science Night! Different stations will be set up around the Museum for kids and adults to discover and discuss Mammoths, Mastodons and More! No registration necessary for this drop-in program.

Chocolate Fest
1-4 pm; Fee: $15 for 1 child and adult
Chocolate lovers unite! Learn about chocolate’s connection with the natural world while spending the afternoon – indoors and out – enjoying chocolate treats that you can make and share on Valentine’s Day. Northwoods Dutch Oven Cooking Group will demonstrate chocolate recipes using Dutch ovens, Elgin Public Museum will host “Before Hershey Bars: A Cultural Look at Chocolate.” Hawthorn Hill Nature Center will host “A Chocolate Hike” at 2 PM. Please register through Elgin’s Parks & Recreation Department at 847-931-6123. Chocolate Fest will be held at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center.

Bison Feeding in Lords Park
7-8:30 am; Fee: $2/adult, $1/child, members free
Join Lords Park Zookeeper as he feeds the bison, deer and elk, while sipping hot chocolate provided by the Museum! Begin at the Elgin Public Museum for a discussion on the natural history of the animals, then walk over to the Lords Park Zoo. Learn all about these wild animals, including their habits. Please dress for the weather. Registration required and space is limited.
