Bring Them Back Alive
7-8 PM; Fee: $7, $4 Members

The swamp metalmark is an extremely rare butterfly that is limited to alkaline wetlands. One of the last populations in Illinois was Bluff Spring Fen in Elgin, where the species vanished sometime after 1939. Today, scientists at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago are learning to breed this species in the laboratory, and are attempting to restore a population at its historic Elgin location. Dr. Doug Taron will take us through the highs and lows of this process in his adult lecture, “Bring Them Back Alive: The Return of the Swamp Metalmark Butterfly to Illinois.”
